The Pirates of Penzance is a light comedy opera by Gilbert and Sullivan and the most frequently played of all their plays . The official premiere was on the 31st December 1879 in Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York. The very first London production was presented at the Opera Comique on the 3rd of April 1880. There have been several modernised productions of The Pirates of Penzance since then, including Joseph Papp's 1981 production on Broadway.
